Pre-production begins.

Welcome to beyondapollo.com! This is where we will be keeping you updated on the development of Michael Grodner’s feature film debut based on the novel by Barry N. Malzberg. Stay tuned for more frequent updates in the coming weeks.

Oh and read the novel if you haven’t yet. It’s wonderful and I’m sure it will get you excited about the work we have ahead of us.

I am very much looking forward to seeing this. Beyond Apollo is one of my all-time favorite novels and I’ve long thought it could be the basis for a really fantastic movie.

I first discovered Malzberg as a teen, and since then I’ve collected literally dozens of his thin novels.

Beyond Apollo is still my favorite & one of my fave books, period. It has a mordant, defeated feel to it (as does much Malzberg) that, frankly, I related to due to depression. I was also shocked to find that he’s the only science-fiction writer I know of who doesn’t believe in space exploration.

But aside from that, Barry M. is a wonderful wordsmith, too.

Find the book (& his others) and read it/them–it’s great, and let’s hope they figure out an equally brilliant way to put this cerebral story on film!…

Something must be in the air- I read my first Malzberg novel “Galaxies” recently and I’ve picked up several more since then (just finished “On a Planet Alien”). I’m especially looking forward to reading his sci-fi criticism and nonfic and, now, “Beyond Apollo”. Malzberg is a very sharp thinker on sci-fi, literature, and the world they have created and which we live in, and he is fast becoming a literary hero of mine.

Synopsis

The first two-man mission to Venus is aborted in mid-flight and abruptly returns back to Earth. When rescue crews go to retrieve the space capsule, they make a startling discovery: The Captain is missing there is no sign of his body whatsoever - and strangely enough, the lone surviving astronaut has no clue about what took place.

Beyond Apollo tells the riveting story of when that astronaut, Harry Evans, returns to earth and must answer to the authorities about what really happened on board the doomed flight to Venus. His mind-bending struggle to figure that out is a harrowing journey through the possibilities: Was the Captain murdered? Did he commit suicide? Or were alien beings responsible for his demise? The answer, as Evans will eventually discover, is far more terrifying than anything he could possibly imagine.

Based on the award winning book by Barry N. Malzberg, Beyond Apollo captures the eerie isolation of delving into the unknown, begs us to ask the unanswerable, and marks the separation between the real, unreal and surreal.
